The town of Bridgewater has come a long way since it was first purchased from a Lenape Indian tribe. Chartered in 1749 by King George II of Great Britain, and incorporated in 1798 as one of New Jersey's original 104 municipalities, Bridgewater is now a vibrant suburb of over 33 square miles at the center of Somerset County. With roughly 43,000 residents (according to the 2000 census) Bridgewater is Somerset County's second largest municipality. It's conveniently located roughly 45 miles from New York City and 65 miles from Philadelphia. Residents here enjoy a significant business community, a highly ranked & regarded school system, a variety of parks and recreation opportunities, including several top quality golf courses nearby, and convenient access to everywhere via the NJ Transit trains & busses, and major highways (Routes 287, 78, 22, 202, and 206.) Martinsville is the Northeastern section of Bridgewater, bordering Bernards & Warren Townships. Though part of Bridgewater, and sharing all the same schools & government services, it has a unique identity. Follow this link to see information exclusively about Martinsville.
